Colonel Thomas GAVRANOPOULOS

Hellenic Army – Infantry

MPSOTC Commander

 

Colonel Thomas Gavranopoulos was born in 1971, in Munich, Germany.

He was admitted to Hellenic Military Academy “EVELPIDON” in 1990 and in 1994 he was commissioned as 2nd lieutenant (Infantry).

He was promoted as follows:

  • 1997   Lieutenant.
  • 2002   Captain.
  • 2008   Major.
  • 2014   Lieutenant Colonel.
  • 2020   Colonel.

Service

  • Served as platoon and Company Commander and G2 (Intel) – G3 (Ops) Officer in a Mechanized Infantry Battalion
  • Served as Deputy Commander, Commander and G2 – G3 Officer in an Antitank Company
  • Served as Company Commander and G2, G3 Officer in a Border Guards Battalion
  • Served as Company Commander, G2, G3 Officer, Deputy Commander and Commander in an Airmobile Battalion (also the Core Battalion of EU HELBROC Battlegroup)
  • Served as Operations, Plans and Training Officer in an Airmobile Brigade and DCOS OPS at the EU HELBROC Battlegroup
  • Served as Assistant Chief of Staff (ACOS) PAO and later as ACOS G2 in NRDC-Greece and on the 19th of May 2022 he assumed the duties of the Commander of Multinational Peace Support Operations training Center (MPSOTC)

International

He served :

  • 13 months in UN Mission “UNOMIG” (United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia-Abkhazia). 2 months as Military Observer in HOTEL Team in GALI Sector HQ, 5 months Head Military Information Officer in GALI Sector HQ and 6 months Chief Military Information Officer in Sukhumi, at the main HQ of the Mission.
  • 7 months in EU Mission, EUFOR “ALTHEA”, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as JOC Shift Director.
  • 2 years as DCOS OPS at the EU HELBROC Battlegroup, also responsible (from HELBOC BG side) for the EU exercises MILEX-2015, TALOS-2015 and MILEX-2016.
  • 3 years as CJ2X Staff Officer and Section Head in NATO JFC Brunssum HQ, in The Netherlands.
  • 6 months in NRDC-Greece, in Thessaloniki, as ACOS PAO and ACOS G2.

He has successfully graduated from all basic and advanced training National schools and courses. The Hellenic Infantry School Basic and Advanced Courses, the Hellenic Staff and Command Military School, the Hellenic Supreme Joint War College and the Hellenic National Defence College.

He holds an MA in Applied Strategy and International Security of University of Plymouth, United Kingdom.

  • NATO Public Affairs Officers (PAO) Basic course, MPSOTC Greece (2023).
  • ESDC Integrated Border Management (IBM) Course, MPSOTC Greece (2023).
  • NATO Strategic Communications Course (StratCom), MPSOTC Greece (2023).
  • Building Integrity Course, MPSOTC Greece (2023).
  • International Humanitarian Law Course (IHL), MPSOTC Greece (2024).

Col Thomas Gavranopoulos is married and has one daughter.
